In-app Traffic for iGamingevaluating sources by FTD quality

How to assess in-app sources, attribution and casino app funnels through registration, first-time deposit and player quality rather than installs.

In-app Traffic for iGaming: evaluating sources by FTD quality

Not clicks. Not installs. Depositing players. This is the core rule for evaluating In-app Traffic in iGaming. A large install volume may look like growth while producing little commercial value if users fail to register, complete KYC or make a first deposit.

This guide explains how to structure In-app Traffic for iGaming so that every source is assessed through funnel quality and depositing cohorts.

What an in-app source is

In-app ads appear inside other apps: games, utilities, entertainment and content products. Formats may include video, interstitial, rewarded placements and native units. The channel can offer meaningful scale, but user context and interaction mechanics differ from social or search.

That is why CPM, CTR or CPI alone cannot describe source quality. Teams need to know where the impression happened, which format was used, what the user saw after the click and how that user moved through the product funnel.

Build measurement before launch

Create one system of identifiers and events before buying traffic. Preserve source, campaign, placement, creative and available sub parameters for every visit. Naming should match across the ad platform, MMP and internal report.

A minimum event chain includes:

  1. Click and install describe top-of-funnel volume.
  2. First open confirms that the app actually launched.
  3. Registration shows completion of the first product step.
  4. KYC complete reflects readiness to continue when verification applies.
  5. FTD connects the source to the first commercial outcome.
  6. Redeposit, revenue and retention reveal quality after the first deposit.

Events should arrive without duplication and use clear time zones and currencies. Otherwise discrepancies between the platform and internal data can influence decisions more than the real difference between sources.

The funnel from install to FTD

The funnel separates a traffic-quality issue from a product issue.

Install → first open

A large gap may point to accidental interactions, slow delivery, device incompatibility or weak inventory quality.

First open → registration

Speed, localization, offer clarity and the number of mandatory actions all matter. When the ad promises one journey and the app opens with another, users leave quickly.

Registration → KYC

Explain why verification is required, which information is needed and how long the process should take. Errors, unclear requirements and missing local language reduce completion.

KYC → FTD

Relevant payment methods, currency, minimum amount, trust and transaction reliability become critical here. Cheap registration does not compensate for poor deposit conversion.

The broader player journey is covered in our guide to iGaming marketing and depositing cohorts.

How to assess source quality

Review a connected set of metrics for every source and placement:

  • CPI and first-open rate;
  • registration cost and install-to-registration;
  • registration-to-FTD and CPA FTD;
  • average first deposit and cohort revenue;
  • redeposit, retention and LTV within an agreed window;
  • suspicious, duplicated or technically invalid event share.

A source with a higher CPI may be more profitable when it brings more depositing and repeat-active players. Comparisons also need the same maturity window: yesterday's cohort should not be judged against users observed for several weeks.

Creative for the in-app context

An in-app user is already engaged in another experience and may not intend to open a new product. Creative has to establish context quickly without creating a misleading expectation. Rewarded and interstitial formats depend on the opening seconds, a clear transition and consistency with the store or landing page.

Test distinct angles: a game scenario, product mechanic, local event, social proof or a permitted promotional proposition. Give every angle its own identifiers so performance can be connected to registration and FTD, not CTR alone.

How to test sources

The first test should be a controlled comparison. Avoid combining too many GEOs, formats and landing journeys in one data set.

  • Define budget, duration and stop rules before launch.
  • Separate major sources and placements.
  • Use an aligned creative set and one baseline product journey.
  • Compare ad-platform reporting with MMP and backend events.
  • Return KYC, deposit and player-quality feedback every day.

Scaling without losing quality

Increase budget only after a source confirms stable CPA FTD and acceptable cohort quality. Scaling changes the inventory mix, so monitor placement, GEO, OS and app version throughout the process.

We treat in-app buying as one performance system: source, creative, product funnel and postback events need to operate together. Start a conversation with IK.Agency if you want to audit the current attribution setup or run a controlled test.
